Jan Erik Simonson, 63, died unexpectedly in his home in Duluth, on July 5, 2011. He was born Jan. 9, 1948, to Else-Marie and Thorbjorn Dybvik in Oslo, Norway. He and his mother moved to America in 1952, where Clyde Simonson became his stepfather.He naturalized his U.S. citizenship in 1966. He worked for the U.S. Corps of Engineers from 1967 to 1970 on the Tug Marquette and has sailed all of the great lakes. He graduated in 1966 from Central High School in Duluth. He was fondly known as "Simey" by his buddies. He spent many years living in Rochester, Minn.He enjoyed playing guitar, hunting, fishing, and being on the lakes. Jan was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Erik; and a brother, Alan.He is survived by his daughter, Tonia (Geoff) Forscher of Rochester; son Joel (Hillary) Simonson of Longmont Colo.; a brother, Tom Simonson of Duluth; a sister, Anne; six nephews; three nieces; and five grandchildren.
