Carl Peterson

Carl Herbert ("Herb") Peterson, Jr. passed away on July 27, 2015 at Bayshore Health Care Center after along battle with Parkinson's and heart disease.
Carl was born Feb. 20, 1948 in Duluth, Minn. After graduating from Duluth Central High School in 1966, he served our country in the Navy during the Vietnam War. A fond memory of his time in the service was having the ship's captain "request" his being the ship's Santa Claus.
After his honorable discharge, Carl returned to Duluth and attended Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College and majored in computers and electronics. Upon graduation he worked for the Army Corps of Engineers, Garon Knitting Mills and Twin Ports Cyclery.
Carl was an avid bicyclist and a member of the local cycling club. Although Carl's medical condition prevented him from riding, he continued to have a strong interest in bicycling and would never miss a broadcast of cycling events. Carl was an expert mechanic and could fix just about anything. He was also a model-building enthusiast.
Carl is survived by his sisters Leona Krieg of Duluth and Shirlie (Jeffrey) Theis of Milwaukee, Wis,; brother Roger (Debra) of Duluth; nieces Stephanie Krieg and Jennifer Peterson of St. Paul, Minn.; nephews Brian Krieg and Mathew Peterson of Duluth; aunt Dorothy Peterson of Luck, Wis.; and many cousins.

Herb was a close friend of mine all through our childhoods and a neighbor in the Chester Creek area of Central Hillside.  He was also a resident of the same nursing home as my Father.

Here's a link to Veteran's interview that my friend Carl "Herb" Peterson had when he was a resident at the Bayshore Nursing Home on Park Point:

Henry, thanks for posting Carl's interview.  Interesting story.

Carl and I share the same birthdate, and were both born in St. Lukes.

Tom Barnstorf and I took the test to enter the Navy Reserve when we were juniors.  They wanted us, but from what I remember Tom's mom talked him out of joining.  So with Tom not joining, I also decided not to join.  We ended up getting college deferrments.

Duane,

I was a close friend of "Herb" as we grew up in the same neighborhood of Chester Creek on 13th avenue East and 3rd Street.  Herb's family was on 4th Street and my mom and I were on 3rd Street.  He was an extraordinary person.  The only person I've ever met with a true photographic memory.  He never drove a car himself, but yet he could tell you the bore and stroke of all of the muscle cars of the era.  He had a vast knowledge of military tanks and battleships also.  Just a remarkable guy if you could get to know him.

I was lucky enough to get a medical deferment at the very last minute.  My draft number was 57 and our bus ride to St Paul for or mental and physical exams was quite a fiasco.  Wondering if you along that Greyhound bus ride to the cities for draft physicals??

Henry, I was fortunate to get number 302 in the draft lottery.  My brother Bob, Central class of 67, represented our family in Vietnam.  He served as an artillery surveyor in the 1st Cavalry Division.
